I occasionally want to listen to music in another room using iTunes’ nifty sharing facility. When I want general background music I usually select my smart-playlist “My rated tracks”, ie. anything that’s been rated at all (If you don’t rate your tracks, you’re missing out on some very useful iTunes features).
Unfortunately, the first track to greet me was a Pink Floyd track that could hardly be described as cheerful (The Fletcher Memorial Home). I’d rated it en-mass with the other tracks from Echoes. It’s here that I hit the problem with iTunes music sharing - you can’t change the rating when you’re in another room.
Well, you can’t be default, but after downloading Netratings, written by my friend Martin, the problem is elegantly solved. Run it up on both the iTunes music “server”, and the client, and it becomes possible to rate tracks, see the artwork associated with an album, and so on.
It’s still alpha software (ie. use at your own risk), but does the trick very nicely.
